There are few cycling accolades as prized and revered as the ‘Maillot Jaune’, or yellow jersey. Worn by the leader of the Tour de France since 1919, the jersey has become a symbol for the talent, hard work and dedication needed to lead the Peleton, which constantly snaps at the heels of the wearer.
The ‘Maillot Jaune’ has become a style icon as well as a sporting emblem and the Yorkshire in Yellow project celebrates this distinctive feature of the Tour’s heritage. MADE NORTH invited local, regional and international contemporary artists, designers, and creatives to design their own tribute to the ‘Maillot Jaune’ in the form of a yellow T shirt. From simple drawings or doodles, to more complex and detailed designs.
Visitors to Sheffield can see the Yorkshire in Yellow T shirts on display at the city’s Millennium Gallery from June to September 7th 2014. Yorkshire in Yellow is also part of Sheffield Design Week, a festival connecting design, craft, architecture and creativity across the city led by MADE NORTH.
Yorkshire in Yellow is a partnership between Museums Sheffield and MADE NORTH, a platform for northern designer/makers.
Margaret Calvert (born 1936) is a British typographer and graphic designer who, with colleague Jock Kinneir, designed many of the road signs used throughout the United Kingdom, as well as the Transport font used on road signs and the Rail Alphabet font used on the British railway system and an early version of the signs used in airports. The typeface developed by Calvert and Kinneir was further developed into New Transport and used for the single domain GOV.UK website in the United Kingdom.
Margaret also design branding and signage solutions for the Tyne & Wear Metro, including the font Calvert.
